Buying a Motorhome from abroad

The weekend just gone there was a really nice knaus motorhome it turned out the owners bought the van and shipped it in from Germany and even after paying the duty they still got a really good value motorhome.
I realise this will not appeal to all, for a start there are hurdles to jump, the van will probably be left hand drive and taking it back for warranty work might be an issue but for the brave and adventurous it may be an option.

Maybe not so much for those in the south but for us northerners the euro rate and no VRT can make it a very viable option, especially if you dont mind LHD. Example is Benimar 294 in Uk list price is £51995 and in Belgium €53800 at exchange rate of 1.25 makes it £43040, yes you need to check that the equipment levels are the same but £8k of a price difference!!

I always thought that rule only applies to people moving residence to Ireland from another country.

You don't have to leave Ireland to make a saving of that kind of money. A certain Motorhome dealer wanted €10,000 more than I payed Privately for the same Motorhome as ours last year, it had the same mileage as ours and it was a year older.

Remember you have a lot of costs importing,
1, air fare out
2, diesel
3, ferries back
4, have to test ( buying at home there might be some test left on irish van)
5, have to tax (buying at home there might be some tax left too)
6, Number plates
7, cost of your time away
8, VRT

No VRT .. maybe I should just move to N. Irl
