Engine way down on power and whistling noise.

Hoping someone here has experienced this problem or can recommend a good specialist repair place. My local mechanic has run out of ideas. We have changed fuel filter ,checked diesel pump working good, checked all hoses for leaks , cleaned actuator rod and checked waste gate operation, checked map sensor, diagnostic reads no faults. At the minute the siren sound is so loud I thought an ambulance was behind me and the van would hardly pull up a hill.

Ps On tickover and low revs the engine is running quiet and sweet.

Agree. Turbo.
Pull of input Pipe and check for lash in turbo shaft.
NI turbocare or GT turbos sort you..... also Caldwells in Strabane can refurbish and have experience of them doing a good job. 02871885050 and they can do next day repair no problem.
If using correct diagnosis computer you should be able to monitor boost pressure on drive cycle to establish for sure.

Thanks all. yes tubo was my next port of call and since a new Turbo Cartridge is less than £100 or a full recon Turbo with wastegate is less than £200 going to do that anyway even if that's not the problem. Feel better on my holidays in the Alps knowing it's been changed. Will let you know how it all turns out , maybe will be a week or two as I am busy with other things at the moment as well.

Check your intercooler & pipes for cracks, that's going to be very hard as the split only appears when under pressure, is van letting out any smoke & hissing noise? If it is then check those before anything, do plenty of checking as swapping a turbo is expensive,

My advise would be to go to an old timer mechanic who wants to get his hands dirty and sort your problem,
mechanics now a days "well plug in diagnostics" and if diagnostics tell you nothing they look like this

Hope you get sorted soon

If the whistling persists, look around to see if Roger Whittaker is nearby.

mad max -yes, checked pipes but as you say very difficult to be sure they are ok , no hissing noises just a bit of black smoke from exhaust. Stuck a camera thingy up the turbo exhaust side and it shows badly scored vanes so I am assuming something had got in there and done damage .

helgahobby - not really a whistling noise more a haunting wailing sound so also considering an exorcism.

Well took the turbo cartridge out today and there are no vanes left on the exhaust side ie worn away to nothing . Tried putting a pic on here but no joy . I don't know what has caused this as the bearings are fine , no play and running silky smooth . Grateful for any tips before I go about installing the new parts when they arrive.

Yes fixed ( fingers crossed) - Only had a short 20 mile test drive but everything seems to be ok , revving out , plenty of power,no smoke, no red light. Checked intercooler, clean as a bead in there Can hear the turbo faintly working now , I hope that's a good sign. Have planned a 300 mile round trip to Lough Arrow campsite in May so that should be the ultimate test and if that goes ok then we are ready for France this summer.
