Electric Shorting

Good afternoon All
Sitting last night having a lemonade and the water boiler switches off, lights in pull down bed area, water pump, lights in bathroom all stop working. Fuse blown.
Replace fuse and she blows.
Wires to water pump roasting and it's not working.
I Wired in spare water pump we carry and it's going full hog. Even when the water taps are turned off the pump is going.
So I have placed a toggle switch on the live to the pump and we can operate in the cabin
What's happened?
Does anyone else keep the water boiler on constantly?
The old water pump is fecked now but would it short the rest?
Thanks gang

We have always left the water heater on while the van is in use.
It has a thermal cut off or thermostatic control but maybe they don't all have that.

Sounds like a faulty pressure switch or flow switch which is keeping the pump running. This switch is to tell the pump to turn off when no water is being drawn. Other than that a short on the wiring going to the switch.

hessy on my last 544 hymer that was 1993, the micro switch was on the tap. It wasn't a pressure switch type. It is easy replaced. Two wires, the switch is only about the 7mm long but fidly.

What wonderful information form the members!
If the microswitch was broken and it was informing the old pump to continue working and it was knackered - it blew the fuse.
The wiring on the old pump was blackened it was that fused through.
Brilliant - thanks all

See the shape of that. Welded together!
Hence the pump failing, hence the fuse going!
New switch needed I think? Save the switch = replace the wiring!!

Of which - if the connecting wire is replaced with equivalent thickness diameter - is there a resistance issue or is it an amount of current to dictate the diameter of copper wires?

Is it the wires are coated in somewhat waterproof coating?

Do we need a specific wire if replacing??

(PS new pump knackered before switch identified as wrecked)

You should get the wiring checked. If the correct sized fuse was in place there is no way the cable should have melted like that. The fuse should have blown before the cable started to heat. The cable size should be matched to the load the pump takes and the fuse should be rated to protect both the cable and the pump. It appears that possibly too large a fuse was used. The Pump most likely went faulty causing the current to rise more than what the fuse should have allowed, this then burnt both the cabling and the switch before it eventually blew the Fuse.

The switches are small microswitches and are quite fiddly - i am replacing both as it appears that these switches and that of the Thelford toilet are controlling the 16Amp potential running through them. Alot for a wee switch i think~?

Anyone wire in a Thetford c3 loo before? The Relay with the three wires - can these relays fail as there always a poor water flow from this outlet before the fuse went and to get flow - a turn of the water tap created the fill. The Manual shows 3 Amp fuse inline while there is a 20Amp stuck in here for some reason. If the relay went - surely the water pump would not operate at all?

I am used to three wires from a switch - two controlling the negatives and one with live - but the microswitch has only two connections which are in a loop with the water pump. i.e. Live going into the pump then through the tap microswitches and back to the negative. So when microswitch closes - the pump operates and water runs out of the open valve.

Found circuit diagram and instalation guide. I will try it now!
Yip - got life in the toilet bit, now when the switches arrive - put them over these pump connections also and she should work ok.

As always - any help greatly appreciated!

The relay in the toilet is not functioning properly which is in the same circuit as the taps and water pump.
Getting there!!

OK - got a new relay with a 30Amp fuse in it - linked it up and rewired the taps into the water pump and the fuse etc doesn't blow.
So the knackered relay blew the fuse and welded the micro switch wires together.
Hope the post helps someone else. Its a standard Relay also thanks to Simon LTS.
