hi to all. Just a short enquiry as to motor home insurance. On asking whether or not my insurance would cover the return of my van from abroad if were not drivable.........I was told NO. I'm covered for an hour at roadside ......if it can be repaired........and for towing / transporting to a suitable garage for repairs. But.......what happens in the case of a collision where the van can't be repaired. Have tried to get a definate answer but nothing concrete.
Now......I'm not wishing any harm to person or van and I'm hoping for many miles of trouble free driving.......BUT.........what if. Can anyone enlighten me. :'(

I have Dolmen Insurance and the cover is what you described.

If you are looking for repatriation you will require continental breakdown cover. I had been lead to believe in the past that the policy from Silken covered this but I now know this is not the case.

I am currently looking into continental breakdown cover. It depends on a few factors including age of vehicle,m and weight of vehicle.

like when at home if you have a serious mechanical breakdown which is outside the realms of roadside repair you have to make your own arrangements to get it fixed. Accommodation during repair is another thing and so is repatriation after repair if the driver has 'gone home'
Likewise if seriously accident damaged your insurance will cover repairs, repatriation after fixing is another matter.
I have ADAC membership which covers, among lots of other things, repatriation if the driver is unable to complete the journey. In the event of a write-off, God forbid, the insurance will pay up and also cover any taxes due if the vehicle is left/abandoned in the foreign country.

Remember motorhomes are based on commercial vehicle mechanicals which get a very easy life compared to what they are designed for, and if properly maintained and carefully driven should a very ling time.

Hope this helps.
BTW, looking at our insurance premiums for E70k plus vehicles our claims record as a group must be very good

Thanks for that.......have tried other insurence companies but none seem interested in covering a van @ 3850 kilos, and if abroad want a premium for doing so. I have no problem with Dolmen and hope I never have...........am happy to pay up and fingers crossed come and go without needing to talk to them until premium comes up next year. :'(
Safe driving to all........
