Hiking in Alps

Hi, we have hiked a few times in Pyrenees and in alps with kids but are looking for places even higher up that are accessible using ski lifts in summer. I looked at Matterhorn area around Zermatt which looks fab with great routes above 3000m... however the lift prices are nuts, i'm talking 90£ for an adult for one day!!, they certainly want to keep the region out of the reach of normal working folk like me!
So i'm asking if there are any hikers out there who could suggest some affordable alternatives in the alps (any country).

we did a bit of walking above Lauterbrunnen. I think you can walk right up to the Schilthorn weather permitting. we got the first cable car up and did some walking, we had wanted to get the second cable car up and walk the rest of the way to the top but there was too much snow still (June time)

thanks for the concern eirebus. I am well aware of the condition. What you refer to is HACE (high altitude cerebral edema) which actually only occurs in less than 1% of people to ascend to over 4000meters. I have mountain biked, skid, climbed and worked at 3000m with no ill effects in US and Africa, so hopefully we will be OK.
