Sorry I might have not explained fully the parking on the way to middle is still accessible. But I think the barrier on the middle pier might be a sign of things to come!!
Does anyone know of a council or a harbour commissioners meeting in the last few months as this would have taken some time to put into action ie get estimates make barriers etc, etc. Very sad news or the other hand they could be thinking of a charge.

Height is 2.1.The barrier is at the entrance to the circle.I talked with the lads working with harbour master and basically they don't want campers any more.If anybody noticed there are a few permanent residents there which did not help. They also said that during the summer that due to web they had been overrun resulting in complaints from fishermen and yatch club alike. In short they don't want us anymore in large numbers.

All the more reason for the Poi's to be linked back to the Reviews section on Motorhome Craic.
This is what happens with to much exposure places will get over run.

Was only a a matter of time unfortunately, but it's a pity that discussion wasn't implemented on the way forward. I put on MHC maybe 2 years ago that we should have an unwritten rule, more than 6 already at Howth then move on.

It's still worth establishing the relationship going forward. Does anyone have any form of existing relationship? I'm happy to support in putting a business case or whatever together, should it reach that stage, but haven't stayed and don't know what I could offer to help!
And another one bites the dust. We pay thousands to pursue our hobby and as time goes on the more restricted things become. Why do we have to put up with this? The motor home manufacturer companies should get together and rally governments to provide decent parking for motorhomes as it wont be to long until owning a motor home is no longer viable

Ally I could not agree more and yes i remember you posting a reference to the unwritten rule but that is like talking to the converted. The greed of a large number of Motorhomers when they see something for nothing should not be underestimated ,give them an inch and they will take a mile.
I have stayed at Howth a few times and it was a great spot but when the place was becoming overrun and severe disruption was being caused to the Boating fraternity who pay heavily to use that facility then there can only be one outcome.
No doubt some of the people who caused this to happen will now move on to somewhere else and upset some more people.
I like to wild camp as much as anyone but the bottom line has to be to respect others as you would like them to respect you
(No doubt Ally i am now preaching to the converted)

You know my feelings on this one, Derek. we had this conversationn in Ardmore last year. I think Motorhomers must be the most disorganised group in the Country typical example of this is what happened just down the Road from you in Dunmoreast when the owner of that new camp site managed to get the traditional Motorhome parking spot Shanoon on the top of the hill closed. Many Motorhomers that used Shanoon boycotted the new site and they were supported by an Irish Motorhome club that cancelled their Rally there when they heard the carry on. Then last year their Campaigning was thrown back in their face when another Irish Motorhome Club held a rally in the boycotted Site.
How can we get any place when Clubs and Motorhome interested parties are not singing from the same hymn sheet?

It would be nice to spare a thought for these guys, they have to go to sea in all weathers/conditions and repair their nets when on shore, when we enjoy ourselves in the comfort of our vans on shore.
I feel they're should be a greater respect for other users at any Pier anywhere in the country.
I'm disappointed but not surprised. Certain motorhomes destroyed it for those of us who actually care and the MH who insisted on parking in the disabled spot and refusing to move hasn't helped anyone. Had planned an evening there and eating in Aqua, looks like that won't happen now. Shame so many ruin the adventure

This is a great pity, Iv parked there a few times, never in the circle because of the numbers parked there, normally I parked on the approach to the circle but only if there was plenty of space & not causing any problem to the fishing boats & there crew, I parked once & asked 1 of the fishermen if I was ok to park & we had a little chat about the use of the pier & he said most don't have a problem with the motorhomers but a few had because some had parked in places blocking lorries in, stopping people getting to their boats etc, he even told me that some had drove in over the top of nets laid out on the pier for repair...I hope we can get this great place back, If they knew the amount of Guinness I drink when I'm there they would get rid of the barrier right away...lol
My feelings regarding the closing of Howth and all of the other places which are being closed are that it is not mainly down to the miss behaving of the motor home fraternity, there are always some people who abuse the system even on the continent. The biggest problem is that not enough suitable well managed parking areas for motor homes are available. The demand for decent well managed and well situated places to park clearly out way the supply. One of the best examples which can think of is the Aire in Hornfluer in France This Aire is constantly full in the summer months and is designed to cater for almost 100 vans That is a revenue of approximately €1000 per night for the local authority. The local businesses in the Town are obviously very pleased to welcomes motor homes as the spending power of the occupants of 100 motor homes is huge.
The system is very user friendly, you pay you fee in an automated machine take a ticket display the ticket. This is then checked by a traffic warden who is accompanied by a member of the local police. A three day limit is in force this gives the local authority the power to move any undesirables on. The local authority clean and maintain the Aire
I ask why oh why ? are we not able to see the potential for similar facilities be it on such a large scale or just a few places in a local village. I read and speak German and on most of the German forums there are often stories about the lack of facilities for motor homes in our beautiful country.

I'm also with you Edgar & Chalkey... ireland is, and never will be set up for MH's.... partly due to our knacker friends and irresponsible motorhomers who seem not to care a jot for their actions. We have toured France and will continue to do so for extended periods and will leave our revenue there as Ireland seems not to need us. The amount of continental vans, and indeed UK visitors who keep away from Ireland like a plague because we are so anti MH is amazing...... indeed the amount of Irish vans, including me, who don't bother with Ireland because of this attitude is growing. We're off for an extended tour of France and maybe Spain again in a few weeks, so easy.
Most important thing is to keep the ferris running from Roslare....LOL.
The last time we where in Howth there was a blue camper and an old camper up on jacks, the blue one was there from last year and the old one on jacks was there from the summer, why did the Harbour master let them park there for so long,i think that this helped the residents case to put the barrier up,so in my mind I think this was on the cards for a long time and maybe the Harbour master knew that letting these 2 campers stay would help in closing the middle pier to us

I am not very familiar with the parking arrangement in Howth, when you say there is a barrier in the entrance to the middle pier do that mean you can still park on some other pier in Howth or is it totally closed to Motorhome parking?

Part of the pier is closed but is this the beginning of the end , although trucks have to enter this area to service the fishing fleet .
Does anybody know if it is possible to park up at the Deerpark hotel complex , I think the hotel is closed but not sure ???

Was mentioned at the weekend that those who frequented Howth may now use Greystones and it will only be a matter of time before that parking facility is also removed, this is a real possibility.
Should we be advising those area's to implement signage after agreeing the maximum amount of Motorhomes allowed at any one time to protect other spots from being overrun?
Think we need to be more pro active to try and stop some ruining it for others, if we could perhaps get something like a maximum amount of Motorhomes at area's then we could spread the word on the internet and to other clubs perhaps?
Is that the wrong thing to do? do you have any other idea's?

There are alot of people out there with their heads so far up their own arse the cant see or hear anything but themselves ,so volintary policing wont work , Greystones wont take the numbers that Howth can so that will be gone too

We were on the Ile de Re in France last year and went to an Aire that was signed "6 vans max".There were three French vans in front of us tying to get in, accepted the fact there were five there already and they, all three, drove off. It should and could be self policing if the penalties outweigh the chances of getting caught on. The French are used to it, they had to learn some way.

Jack,
You can still park on the lower end of the pier, but as you know it is tight and can be busy with refrigerated trucks/fishermen repairing nets etc.
I spoke to the harbour master to day- see note under 'campsites', it is not really ideal for pleasant parking but if it is not too busy it is acceptable

Greystones is already reduced due to the ongoing building work and I can foresee it reducing even more (read gone) when the new yacht club facilities and apartments become operational.
