I've been looking at tyre prices online and found Tyreleader.ie seem to have a really good range of commercial/light truck tyres and at very good prices...

Does anyone have any experience of these guys?

Where are they shipped from? I once bought tyres from Eire tyres at what I thought was a good price, they were shipped from Germany and after a while one developed a problem and I had to buy another locally. They were no longer cheap, if I bought locally I could have gone back for a replacement.

Based in Germany.

I've also used eiretyres (Delticom AG, also based in Germany), but for car tyres only. They are more expensive than Tyreleader.ie for the known brand, sizes & weight loadings I'm looking for.

Never had any bad luck with Eiretyres, luckily it seems.

Be careful of anyone selling German tyres. There was a lad at in Athlone and it was a bit of a scam.
Apparently in Germany as part of the equivalent of the DOE or NCT you must change all your tyres each year.
Somebody has become wise to this at there are warehouses full of 1 year old tryes over there. Irish lads are bringing them in by the truck load and selling them on cheap.

Some are as good as new but could have faults that you don't know about or can't see.

One was sold in Athlone that had being plugged six times.

Yep, the guys there are very helpful.

I've got a quote from them, but I'm just checking around to find the best deal.

Ironically, I'm also looking at options to buy new wheels from the lads at NorthHants. I've got 16.5" on the camper at the moment, and finding reasonably priced tyres for those sizes is nigh impossible.
Changing to 16" wheels opens up a lot more possibilities...

I know where you are coming from Kevin, but will the 16'' throw out your speedometer and make it heavier on Petrol? Maybe you could get the same Diameter tyres in 16''

I bought Tyres for a 4x4 from this crowd and found them good in the past

You're spot on there Pat. It's important not to alter the outer circumference of the tyre when changing wheel rim size. The wheel rim will reduce to 16" but the sidewall of the tyre needs to increase by the same amount to ensure the circumference doesn't change.

Heavier on petrol is something I definitely don't need!!

Hi, sorry for thread hijack but do you all use the Michelin Agilis camping tyres or ordinary commercial tyres?

what is the difference?

As far as I know there are two manufacturers of "Camping" tyres, Michelin and Continental. Depending on the manufacturer of the motorhome will dictate which is fitted as standard.

Personally I will fit commercial tyres so long as they have the same or greater load rating as the original equipment as it gives more choice. Some will argue differently as the camping tyres give greater grip on grass etc etc etc, but I am mainly on roads not fields so not so important to me.

You are more likely to get your tyres to a certain age and need to change them with cracked side walls due to UV damage than actually wear them out.

I would agree with the FC. I ran my van on Toyo HO9 tyres which were winter tyres giving better grip on grass and mud.

I have read that camping specific tyres have more ply in the walls. 8 I think. The theory is that camper vans run near to their max load most of the time, but vans are only occasionally fully loaded. The sidewalls take the brunt.

Lots of further interesting reading on websites like tyresafe and oponeo.

Use the search function up top of the page, this has been discussed in the past........as I recall Maurice reminding me that my tyres are like super singles  (super singles are the wide tyres that go on artic trailers)

Don't forget that as a craic member there's 10% off at modern tyre depots

I heard also the heavy side walls also had to do with many Motorhomes been standing in the one position for long periods of time and it was to counteract flat spots on the tyres. Our van was fitted with Commercial tyres when we got it, but we use it all year round so I am not worried about flat spots.
One thing I would urge people to do is check the date on the new tyres. We bought our van a 2008 model last year and the new tyres were suppose to be fitted the previous year but when I checked them they were manafactured in 2011, I do believe they were fitted when I was told as no one would replace tyres after three years.

It's also note worthy to make sure your chosen tires are at the correct pressure for your running weight.

If you look up your chosen tires specifications, you should hopefully find a chart of Tire Pressure vs Weight Capacity.

You will notice that a difference of just a couple of PSI can alter your tires carrying capacity significantly.
With a motorhome nearly always close to max load you should really check your pressure before taking a trip.

When I was getting my tires the guys (Kids) at the tire place had no idea and told me they normally pump them (van tires) up to 50PSI. They actually needed to be at 63PSI to meet my needs with a little safety margin.
