Hi all
Have just booked ferry for our first trip to France, was wondering do I need to purchase travel insurance or is our Motorhome insurance enough?
Really looking forward to our trip but am little bit nervous of forgetting something important!
Thx for any advice

Hi,

I would suggest it might be useful. The Motorhome insurance will cover all things Motorhome, including theft and some cover for belongings.

The EHIC (old E111) is the very least you should take. It is of course free and will cover the emergency medical care which you may need whilst abroad. Sometimes all your expenses are met in the country you are visiting and sometimes you have to pay up front and recoup when you get home.

We always take a stand alone travel insurance policy. Lots of the features are of no use or do not usually apply, such as lost luggage, missed flight, connections etc. BUT the one major reason it is worth having is to be repatriated home by, for instance, Air ambulance, or worse to have a body brought home. How many times do you see doleful faces in photos of people who have had mishaps abroad and are stuck there unfit and unable to afford the cost of repatriation. We had a relative who had a stroke in Portugal who, because they had travel insurance was placed in a private hospital, treated for several weeks and then flown in a private jet with accompanying nurse to London and then on to Belfast. The insurance also covered the extra accommodation and travel costs of the husband and the costs of flights for another family member to go out to Portugal for support.

A no brainier as far as I am concerned.

May I ask which company you use and which package.

Thanks

We also take out European Breakdown cover for the motorhome to ensure the best repatriation cover we can find. (not convinced by the repatriation cover on the Dolmen policy)

Any particular reason for lack of conviction in Dolmen Mark?

YES.
They would never answer any questions about it in the past.
I have been told it is much clearer in the latest booklet sent out on renewal..

I also take out separate continental MH cover, with Saga, I think it was around £100 for the year.

The Dolmen policy repatriation is limited to £350/€500 per incident. I doubt that would cover bringing a MH back to Ireland from anywhere except maybe close to the French ports.

I always do mine through the Caravan Club and have found them excellent.

Hi Sol,

I have travel insurance through my bank account (Ulster), although for this year I may have to look further afield as we may be away for longer than the permitted single trip limits. I have been looking at EHICplus which may fit my circumstances (they are a commercial company not linked to the EHIC government scheme).

I reckon it is a bit like car insurance quotes, no two are the same nor are two persons going to be quoted the same amount!

Like Mark I also have stand alone Motorhome recovery through the Camping & Caravan club scheme provided by the RAC. Because I take a family membership for 5 people with European cover, recovery and almost all the bells and whistles, divided by 5 it is nearly cheaper than a basic breakdown membership. I also have the Dolmen cover, so hopefully all the bases covered.

Try ADAC also. Their ins covers breakdown Inc repatriation of van and air ambulance. It covers the member so it is travel and vehicle insurance in one. All for around 90 per couple. It actually covers you here in Ireland for ur daily drive car. Me and many other MHC folk are members. Just used them last month to tow wife after car breakdown. No problem!
