Basically we're starting practically from scratch on next years holiday plans. The wife (boss) wants to go to Aushwitz on a road trip. reading through the various forums for what little scraps of info are there, it looks likely we'll sail Belfast/Larne Cairnryan and onto Newcastle/Ijmuiden , probably taking in the "bridge too far" WW2 stuff and the VW museum on the way through Holland and Germany. Also considering timing it so we catch the BRNO motogp at the same time, or possibly some of the German GPs. We will have two weeks and probably 3 weekends. We covered 2400 miles in the same period this year, so the mileage isn't really an issue. I've asked some of the Polish lads in work, and they say Poland is ok if you stick to camp sites, no wilding it.

so, has anyone any thoughts on the cheapest way of travelling this route, or any lessons learned on similar trips into that area of Europe? Or would people advise a citybreak for Auschwitz and save all that travelling??

PS should have said it'll probably not be August time, maybe September to cut down costs.

Many thanks in advance guys

Aushwitz is a long drive ,we went on a city break as you get to see Krakow and the salt mines too ,Sept would be the best time to go as its a bit quieter and you can use the ACSI card for your campsites en-route Aushwitz/Birkenow is well worth seeing , enjoy which ever way you do it

Hi t18com we go via Larne - Cairn in the morning ferry drive to Newcastle for the night ferry to Amsterdam about 8 in the morning DFDS is a very good service book early as usual. Then we nearly always stay in Delph there is a lovely site close to the old town you can walk in to the centre in 10 mins you should also think of visiting the airbourne muse there is two campsites near it with the commonwealth graveyard beside it all not to far from the bridges

following on from your advice, I tried looking at prices, etc. Are all the ferries going into that region more expensive? I was judging on our own sailing from Rosslaire to Roscoff last year, at 340 euro, I was expecting similar to be honest. Just for the england/Europe end of the sailing was coming in at £400. I haven't checked for land bridge or hull/zeebrugge or any of the other alternatives yet.

Anyone?

I had to be in Oostende for an event in October 2010.
I took the Motorhome and at that time it cost less to do Rosslare to cherbourg with irish ferries and drive to Belgium.
The calculations were taking fuel into account.

just spent an hour doing some research, at this time, Irish ferries Dublin/Holyhead then landbridge Hull/Rotterdam is working out the keenest at 560 euro. that's 2015 prices but not allowing for forum discount etc. mileage to Auschwitz is 800miles on the continent, 215 across Wales/England.

As you are saying the Rosslaire/Roscoff is cheaper but adding 400 miles each way to the continental driving!! We are limited in time in that we can only get two weeks off work, so 17 day max holiday with 3 weekends.

I've gone Belfast Cairnryan then Hull Rotterdam a number of times but coach then on to Auschwitch and it's been good. Probably for us here in NI it's the best way to go. I would just say, prepare yourself of what you will see and hear at Auschwitch as nothing will prepare younger it.

Harwich to Hook of Holland is also fairly keen, but that's a long drive across/down England no matter which way you cross the Irish Sea.

it's looking like we are going Rosslaire/Folkestone and Dover/Dunkirk at the minute, as it's the most wallet friendly. We'll be going probably 8th July, but nothing confirmed yet.
