Leisure / Starter Battery

Hi Folks, a question for the tecnically minded among you. A friend tells me that it's important that the engine starter battery is of the same Ah as the leisure Battery, his reasoning for this is, that if the starter battery is less Ah, say 90Ah, and the leisure is 110Ah, that once the 90 is reached, the charging will cease, and not fully charge the 110 Ah one. I don't agree with him on that , so would someone out there settle that argument. Cheers

I don't think that's true but leads us onto the reasoning behind a Battery to Battery charger which Sterling state is to fool your alternator into thinking the engine battery is not fully charged so it continues charging the leisure. I have never received an answer that satisfies me I need a B2B charger.

Maybe your mate is onto something if you go by the B2B reasoning, but then the engine battery and the leisure would need to be in the same state of discharge for that to work to the ability implied by having them the same AHR.

Surly you are chargeing to 12.6V and not Ah ,how does the charger know what Amps you are going to use ,but Im no expert

Hi Simon ! The difference in capacities of your batteries (Ahr) makes no difference to their charging by the alternator. The charging is governed by the voltage of each battery, not by their capacity. Both batteries will continue charging until fully charged. If only one battery is fully charged that will not prevent the alternator from fully charging the other one.

I can see the logic of matching pairs of Leisure batteries but there is no need at all to match the starter battery.
