Engine stopped

 ·
Posted: 28.10.2015  ·  #1
Hi folks

Quick question was driving from Galway today and there was a brief smell of electrical smoke and the engine just died. Popped the bonnet and there was a small cloud of smoke over the battery which disappeared very quickly. The Aa came out and checked everything fuel is flowing and getting to the injectors, the engine turns normally but it doesn't fire.

The engine was steam cleaned a couple of weeks ago and the flame guard relay cover was loose. Since then a couple of time the van hasn't started (I assume to damp getting into the flame guard relay) but after ten minutes or so it's fires up and runs fine.

My question is if the flame guard relay is fried would it stop the engine running? Having checked the price of a new one does any one have one lying around (£283.00   )

Regards

Phil

sorry to hear of your woes Phil - what does the relay look like?
Is there any other comparable units on other yokes?

The purpose of some relays and sensors is to stop the engine from eating itself so possubly it will stop it from running.

Sorry should have said its a 1993 fiat ducat0 290 based Hymer 2.5td The relay is a printed circuit board with a load of components on and sits just over the battery its about 4 inches by 2 inches - to call it a really dosnet do it justice i think its more like a mini ECU I guess its this one http://coastalmotorhomes.co.uk…5-2-8-tdi/ could do without it at the moment was getting ready to head off to spain for the winter lol

thanks folks taken it off and had a look but without the right test equipment i can't check it. the engine behaves the same with or without it fitted so i am guessing its the problem. Been in touch with East Coast Campers and and just waiting for a reply back from them they may have one or even be able to repair mine.

Cheers

Phil

well gets more interesting lol spoke to the guys at Coastal Motorhome and they didn't think it was the relay - the engine will start and run with out it apparently. got the multimeter out and i reckon have a short on it somewhere as i am getting twelves volts across anything with metal in it. Its defiantly engine wise as I disconnected the living quarters electric just to be sure. So now starts the hunt to check out where . fun and games really don't need this.

Anyone know where the earthing straps are on a 1993 2.5TD Fiat Ducato

Cheers

Few pointers.
Use jump leads for temporary earth between battery and engine.
Test solenoid on injector pump..... the one with 1 wire on it... should be 12v when ign switch on and ALSO WHEN CRANKING.
If 12 volts present does the solenoid "click".... Listen well, it's quite quiet.
That older type of system is straightforward, a mechanical pump opening injectors with pressure, in essence if it gets air and fuel then it will run.
Yes, the engine will run without the flame relay, it's only for cold starting.
Not a lot to go wrong with that system really, any component auto electrician/mechanic will have no issues sorting it, right down to adding another cold start heater relay.

well thought I had it cracked when I found a fuse blown on the immobiliser - changed that but still won't start

Run through your list Jonkil - got 12.58 volts at solenoid without cranking with cranking the voltage drops to 10.48 volts. I can't get close enough to check for the solenoid click (Hymer :-))

Cracked the injectors (one at a time) and cranked engine over and fuel getting to all injectors. So I guess that means the stop injector is working.

I think its time to admit defeat and try and find a mobile mechanic to come and have a look

well got someone to drain the fuel thinking its diesel and petrol mixed but its pure diesel. Sprayed some easy start into the air intake box and it try to catch and fire but won't. Does anyone know of someone who can help - getting desperate now as I have to be back in the UK next week - if i can't fix it in two days i have to arrange for breakdown recovery.

Try hot air into air intake as you have no cold start, maybe a hair drier might work. Can you get a wiring diagram and see what did the relay control?

if easy start is sprayed into the air box the engine tries to start - so it must be fuel delivery somehow I guess. Are there any fuses or relays on the Fiat Ducato 290 engine that might cause the problem. I cracked the injectors again to see if any fuel is coming out when the engine is being cranked and there is but its a very small amount.

I have a very bad copy of the wiring diagram but can't figure most of it out. engine electrics are not my thing sadly LOL

I googled "fiat ducato flame guard relay" and found interesting links on boarde.ie and on fiat forum.Seems that relay also controls fuel solenoid.

If there is little fuel - could it be the fuel pump? Blockage in fuel filter or line?
I am sure this is frustrating the life out of you 🇧🇭 🇧🇭 🇧🇭 🇧🇭 🇧🇭 🇧🇭

Checked the fuel filter and reprimmed it using the lever on the pump and that's all okay. Hopefully have someone coming to look at it this afternoon. If he can't sort it going to get it taken back to the UK on a breakdown truck.

As for frustrating yes it is beyond belief - such is life I guess

Well admitted defeat - being recovered back to the Uk tomorrow. Need to get it fixed before heading off to Spain at the end of the month so can't hang around too long. At least Saga have come up trumps LOL recovery for the van and a hire car as soon as I get off the ferry at Holyhead.

will do the garage in the uk reckons it could well be the immobiliser stopping the fuel flow. Will find out soon enough I guess.

thanks of all the suggestions anyway certainly learnt a far bit about old diesel engines and electrics LOL

Well just spoke to the garage and it was the fuel pump that had died a death - they have repaired/replaced it and its all working again. Looks like Spain for Christmas is back on the cards again :-)
