Gas Leak - From Connection at Bottle

 ·
Posted: 26.10.2015  ·  #1
Hi,

Hoping someone can help me with this one.

I had disconnected my gas bottle during the week and when I attempted to reattach it I could hear and feel gas escaping from the connection at the bottle.

It's the Screw on connection used on the propane bottles.

The connection was new at the point that it was first attached to the bottle and was working fine until I disconnected it.

What I did notice was there seemed to be some chewed up plastic/rubber inside the connection, possibly this was a seal?

As always. Many thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Sol

There should be a rubber seal ( not plastic ) , they can be bought in hardware shops

Ah. Well this would confirm what I suspected.

I wonder did I over-tighten the connection? Or maybe I was just unlucky.

Anyway I think I will carry a spare.

@The Fat Controller, If it turns out to be anything more complicated than a simple replacement seal I will be taking it to a professional.

Get a new regulator rubber seal ring seams to have got caught on the thread of the bottle the bottle might have a cut thread you can buy rubber seals try one and if it does the same thing return the gas to who you got it from but as others have said its not something you want to be messing around with good luck ps run your little finger inside the thread of the bottle to see if it's rough

Hmm. I think I will drop a line to the company who tested and fitted the regulator and connection.

Was it just a generic rubber seal I was looking for in the hardware store?
Or a specific part?

Sounds like I got unlucky. But if I can work out what has gone wrong I can maybe avoid it happening again.

That's the benefits of having a forum of like minded people with encounters off similar natures. Was it at the bottle neck or at the regulators

The regulator is attached to the ceiling of the gas bottle compartment, there is a short pipe that comes from the regulator that connects to the gas bottle. Its at this connection where the leak is.

I haven't looked at it in the light yet, but I noticed a mashed up Rubber ring.

So I guess this is my problem. With a bit of luck the company that fitted it (was on butane, I had the dealer change it to propane) will just send me out a couple of replacement sealing rings. Have to take a day off work to get the motor-home into them, so bit of a pain if it's a 30 second job...

Any yes, this forum is just excellent, would be totally lost without it.

(Edit: Attempting to make explanation clearer)

It's quite a while from I changed a bottle as I have a refillable system but I don't think there is a sealing ring on the bottle to pigtail fitting!

There again I may be wrong

Got a Reply.

"The rubber gasket has been chewed up from overtightening the pigtail hose to the propane bottle. Any local plumbing suppliers should have the gasket for a standard pigtail hose to a propane bottle.

We have them here in stock too but if it’s easier for you to get to a local plumbing shop then it should be easy for you to obtain one."

So looks like Now I need to learn how to properly tighten the connection.
Good of them to reply at nearly 7pm.

:)

I was told "handtight plus a nip." They actually sell a flimsy spanner specially for the task.
