Camper size for ferry booking

 ·
Posted: 17.10.2015  ·  #1
Hi all

I'm hoping to book the ferry to France for next year over the coming days.

I seem to getting much higher prices then those mentioned on other threads.
My camper is big to be fair but it seems to be costing me double.
Camper is 8.7 long and 3 m high

Am I being too honest on the booking forms.
I regularly book a mercedes sprinter long wheel van on as a transit which is much cheaper and never a hassle.

Any tips, at €1500 it's way more then I was expecting

Not sure re your quoted price as I travel in winter with a smaller van, I'm sure others can help re the price. I do remember a few years back on another forum about ferry companies measuring MHs to ensure they were the size stated not longer and penalising those that had understated. That said I have never had this happen to me.
Good luck getting the price down.

When bringing back the van from France a few weeks ago, I had inadvertently selected the wrong height on the drop down menu, going for a smaller height.

When boarding at Cherbourg, the height difference was mentioned , but because the ferry wasn't full they let it pass.

May be a different story if you are going during high season.

We booked our last Motorhome which was just over 6m on the ferry to France this summer but we changed the Motorhome before we went and our current one is just under 8m with the back box and Bicycles on the back and Stena didn't charge any extra for the change in tickets

Would it be fair to say that people here have gotten fares for June/July for less the 800 euro with their motorhome?
I must do the different options on a sailing and see what is the actual difference.

Hi Strand Camping., the price on Irish Ferries is up to 8mts and then up to I think 12, Cant say I have found anybody worried about the fractions .Once came over to Portsmouth from Caen and met a gentleman who laid tarmac with a 7.5 ton ford truck and caravan which was booked on as a transit and trailer. The family were inthe caravan with closed curtains dont think you could do it now.

At the ferry terminals if you look at the road at the book in desk there are markings at 1m intervals, so they can and do from time to time check the length.

A Company that I do Contract Work uses www.victortreacy.com to ferry their service vans over and back to France. they find them very good, if a van is running late they will put them on the next ferry. I think they block book part of the ferry, I don't know if they ship leisure vehicles, it might be worth a phone call though.

After checking all the options tonight, checked for 2 motorhome sizes , 2 adults, 2 kids 4-whatever & 1 under 4

Dates give or take a day are weekend of 18-June to 2 July with cheapest cabins to sleep 4 plus cot

Brittney Ferries Cork to Roscoff camper up to 7 metres x 2.6 metres € 1347
Camper up to 9 metres x 3 metres € 1517

Stenaline Rosslare to Cherbourg camper up to 6 metres €967
Camper up to 10 metres € 972

Irish Ferries Rosslare to Cherbourg over 2.25 € 1135.80
8 metres to 10 metres - no room

Irish Ferries Rosslare to Roscoff over 2.25 € 1288.80
8 metres to 10 metres € 1648.80

Dublin prices are higher again.

So Stena are by far the cheapest but still sounds expensive from some prices that have been mentioned on threads here

Try the same thing only with a weekday sailing instead of a weekend. Although it doesn't surprise me, it's one reason why I do the landbridge to Calais

Hi all,

Just to add my tuppence worth, I have booked Irish Ferries to Cherbourg for travelling out 8 May 2016 and returning 12 July for €626.40. That includes 2 star accommodation. I thought it was more expensive than last year, but it appears to be a lot cheaper than some of the quotes on the forum.

Well I finally booked , it has cost €1400 with a 10% discount with the Irish wheelchair association.

basically my camper is too big at just under 9 meters.

Stena were cheaper but I ended up going with Brittany ferries form Cork , in the end is was down to cabins, as my son is a wheelchair user and our family is 3 kids 2 adults, Brittany have a 4 berth wheelchair cabin where as Stena and Irish ferries only have 2 berth and you cannot book 2 cabins side by side, they won't even guarantee you will be on the same deck and with very young kids thats starting our holiday in the wrong manner.

I have heard the Brittany ferry is a nice crossing form Cork with good facilities, anyone been on it ? it also means a nice short 80 minute drive home on our return to Cork.

we are booked for June 18th back 2 weeks later and we are all very excited already

The high price is because of the European Championship, Ireland are playing Belgium in Bordeaux on the 18th and then Italy on 22nd in Lille. Enjoy :D

My recollection of Brittany Ferries a number of years ago, with my mother and sister (car only) was that it was on a par if not better than any other of the options out of Ireland.

We used Brittany Ferries, Pont Aven ship years ago, I think the ship was fairly new at the time. We also had the cabin for disabled as my son was in his wheelchair so good space to move. Only reason we tend to go Irish Ferries as more regular. Not sure if same but Brittany Ferries ran once a week.
