OK. HERE IT IS!

Where are the motorhome association?
I am talking about the people who claimed to be representing the motorhomers of Ireland.

If they were truly representing all of us I would have expected them to at least made contact in relation to Howth.

Long term members on here will be aware that I have never been a fan of the MA for a few reasons including their secretive nature, lack of transparency and inability to advise correctly.

I firmly believe that Ally is correct, we do need a representative group. A group elected from a broad spectrum of the motoring public not self appointed. This forum is the broadest group of irish motorhomers I am aware of (please correct me if I am wrong) so perhaps we should now be thinking of representing ourselves.

If places like Howth are closing their doors to us how long will it be before the next town does the same? Motorhome owners have ruined Howth for motorhomers, perhaps due to ignorance, perhaps not. This is undoing the good work being done by people like Colin (Baguette) in his area. I understand that many many motorhomers never go onto forums such as this but the rest of us should be informing them of how their actions are creating problems for the majority. It is difficult to approach someone when you see a problem if you are unsure of the correct way yourself but if there was an authorised set of guidelines issued by an official governing body they could be quoted.

This is a prime opportunity for the MA to come out from wherever they have been hiding and make a statement about their work and how they need support to prevent more places like Howth being closed to motorhomes. Perhaps they would get more support than ever before.

If they don't is it time to sort ourselves out?

agreed Mark

motorhome association in all its forms have been quiet, no one trusts them after the previous attempts at contact and assistance

time to move on
forget the motorhome association
if it is felt a body is needed then this is largest forum

maybe start a poll to see who wants to start a group who will take issues forward.

Just picked up on this thread.
Regarding Howth, see here Motorcaravanning Ireland would be willing to lobby the appropriate people in Howth but unfortunately have never seen the port and have no understanding of the issues.

Motorcaravanning Ireland is are currently working with Fáilte Ireland and Waterway Ireland in a bid to bring about an improved situation regarding 'Aires' along the WAW and Shannon.
There are a number of hotels who are prepared to provide overnight parking currently being worked with and hopefully they will soon appear on the MI website

Towns like Kinsale, Youghal and others have also responded with some positive reactions to Motorcaravanning Ireland approaches and begun to show an interest in providing official overnight parking.

However, dealings with 'officialdom' work at an appalling slow space, for example at Cobh this winter is the third during which a services bay has been promised to be put in place for the coming summer season, MI is confident that one will eventually be built and hopefully it will be this year !!

Motorcaravanning Ireland is an unfunded organisation and relies on 100% voluntary effort and funding to maintain its existence and cover any expenses incurred.
However there are moves afoot to revamp the website to make it more interesting and vibrant with the aim of attracting some little financial support to cover it's costs from clubs, the 'trade' and others who hold the view that an open and welcoming environment for motorhome based tourists is in their best interest.

In the meantime all is asked is that those who use motorhomes do so in a responsible manner and act as good ambassadors by not engaging in any behaviour which is likely to bring us into disrepute.
Any inappropriate behaviour by the few represents a disproportionate setback to those of us working to improve the lot of the many.

Finally, those who feel Motorcaravanning Ireland can be of some use in dealings with an authority or person in relation to the development of an official overnight parking area please bring us into the loop and we will do our best to support the initiative.

A positive response Colin. Thank you.

In relation to Cobh and the service bay, are the people involved of the opinion that a French style Bourne is required? The only reason. Ask is that in the north they all seem to have been lead to believe this is the case.

I am now more inclined to favour a united front after reading Colin's input. I would love to help, but I'm afraid I don't suffer fools gladly and am too quick to point it out to 'the hierarchy". What about the moho owners that religiously avoid forums? how can they possibly be brought on board?

MI recommend a service area built by local trades, they're less expensive (no middlemen) and require no specialist maintenance.
MI also recommend no EHU so as not to facilitate long stay clients. Drawing in European it is the opinion of MI that genuine motorhome tourists do not require EHU

I totally agree. Howth is living proof that no hookup is required.
I am so glad that you recommend this. I think in the past the consultants (who obviously we're not Motorhomers) have used campsites as their guide.

I would suggest that help is at hand from many members on this forum if required Colin.

We would consider the MA to be active in NI and would not want to interfere with their good work.
The MA also have their own network of connections in the Councils and Government Bodies in NI which MI don't.

MI also carry a wider brief in the we campaign for parking bye-laws to not restrict the parking of motor caravans in general and treat them like cars, ensure testing is not inappropriately set to commercial vehicle standards, there is also the issue relating to the non-availability of the C1(97) licence an EU facility since 2013 COMMISSION DIRECTIVE 2012/36/EU , plus other motorhome related anomalies in RoI laws/regulations that need to be addressed.

There is a fairly comprehensive chat going on in motor home facts on the same subject and I think someone here previously said that we all should get our heads together as there are so many clubs out there and the only way we can win is together lots of great thought here just so glad to see so many like minded people even if they are approaching it from different angles but we must learn to work together and learn councils and other motor homers the way to go forward P/S sorry for the rant but still pissed off about Portrush Edd

This is a real bummer. The last time we were in Howth was November and had a great night in the bloody stone.
There looked to be at least one resident [if not more] staying there.
We were going to give Greystones a try two weeks ago but when we got there the construction work had pretty much taken over the harbour and i saw some signs although i didnt give them much attention,i think they may have said ''no overnighting'' but dont quote me on that. we ended up at Glenmalure lodge and had a few nice pints. Paul.

Agreed, I have always said that what we need is access to a sewer in some shape or form and fresh water. The thousands of pounds that have been spent on Aire's in NI is crazy and doesn't help our cause.

No the barrier went up. When the work men came to erect the barrier it was on the ground so they had to put it UP and that is where it is now.

Can anyone clarify what the situation is at Howth??? A certain van was parked every year since April to October and when things got too much for them they moved to Broughshane and caused problems there as well. Howth was ever only a stop over not a permanent address. Some spoil it for others.

Hi all stayed in Howth on Thursday and Friday nights. Barrier there but was able to park near it. Harbour Master drove by a few times as well as a motorbike cop and no problem. But would you believe on Friday morning at 10.30 am I saw this guy dump his cassette toilet into the sea. When he left on Saturday he did so with grey water valve fully opened and water pouring out. I did not approach him but I have his REG. NO. If he is doing this here he is doing it everywhere.
However we stayed outside Treacys thatched pub in Co. Laois last night. Lovely people working there made us feel very welcome.

Exactly, John.

I don't think we should be posting Photos, People's Names or Vehicle Reg's on the site as they can be Misinterpreted. As well as Offenders there are also do gooders out there that just want a moment of Glory. Offenders should be REPORTED to the relevant authorities and let them deal with them.

Just my thought, Others might differ!

Absolutely disgusting behaviour no wonder people are turning against motorhomes howth was on my to do list this year but looks like it won't happen these people should be reported if you throw litter from your car you can be fined this should apply to dumping waste from motorhomes might be a good idea to limit parking to maybe 48 hours know of someone who parked at ballntoy for three weeks

Possibly so, but it adds integrity to others that we are not prepared to tolerate that sort of behaviour
