Jan 74 - Jan 76.
Number plates are transferable in UK and nice numbers are preferred as they are not instantly age related as in the mainland. 0- 999 as opposed to 1000-9999, although the sexier ones are in demand also eg 1234. Many bus companies are reluctant to show the age of their buses or folks like to give the impression of a private number plate, I've retained my three digit number plate for 15 years, it costs 85.00 each transfer, but I drive my daily until it dies, so only changed twice in 15 years.

The less digits the more valuable, one of the guys on the American car scene sold a numberplate with three letters and one digit for 12000.

All my vehicles have a 3 diget number plate. The Motorhome has AKZ 740. Discovery DIL 740. Mini One VAZ 740. Citroen C 6 will be ODZ 740. I bought one of the 2cv recently A2CV. They are worth quite a bit of money.

The vehicle needs to be mot'd to take it off and transfer it. If it's on a retention certificate you can only renew the certificate once.

Jack,
How did you manage to get 740 on each plate?
The reg of the Land cruiser is 630 IIM, I think it is a Galway reg, or is ZM Galway?? I am sure Ken, John or Marty will know, The Landrover is a Co. Meath reg.

John,
The land rover was only taxed three times in its life time, we drove it on Trade plates for I suppose Three or four years when the front drive shaft going from the gear box to the front axle broke and cracked the transfer box housing, so it was left sitting for another five or six years before I repaired it and put it back on the road and drove it for about a year when a brake pipe burst in it and it was never driven since other than to start the engine every five or six years since . it starts no problem, and the clutch never stuck to the flywheel.
I bought the Land cruiser in Co Wicklow and started it when I got it home but could not run it for long as the frost plug behind the injector pump is corroded and leaking water.

Up here you can buy a registration number and move it from vehicle to vehicle on a cherished transfer.

Jack, what's the significance in the plates having 740 on them.

FC the significance of 740 is far too long to go into here. Just to say an old farmer who had a Renault 4 with 740 on it and it was scrap. If often tried to buy it off him to get the plate but he would not sell it to me. When he died his solicitor contacted me saying he stated in his will that I had to conduct his funeral service. After the committal at the graveside the solicitor came up to me and handed me the keys of the Renault 4. He had signed the paper work etc and had stated in his will how it should be carried out. After that I bought numbers with 740 for the various cars. There's a lot more to it but that's it in a nutshell.

That is a lovely story jack, its not unusual for people who have matching numbers to have some sort of logic behind it, but yours is probably the best one I have heard.

Wished I had a week when I did 600 miles, usually did between 40 to 50,000 p.a. always picked Mondeos because their fuel economy was magic with the 2lt D. and tax ripoff was better than anything else of similar size.
Glad to say now don't have to and have knocked off the end zero now.
