If we are to be fair this was and still is a bus/coach park,if Coleraine council had of been serious about an Aires they would have taken it to East Strand carpark off Causway street which is level for a start and the biggest carpark in the town within easy walking distance of all amenities .

This Aires is in my opinion designed to discourage Motorhomers rather than facilitate them, and this in keeping with pacifying certain caravan site owners in the area.

The losers will be the traders so let us hope that they make their feelings known to Coleraine Council when their rates bill appears and trade could have been better.

Just the opinion of one Motorhome owner who will not be using the shambolic parking facilities which Coleraine Council wish to call an Aires.

Yes Nipper, The bus is a motorhome. He is into grass track racing all over the UK. It is half motorhome and half workshop.

there is a motorhomes only sign here, but the aire station is still fenced off so it cant be used, there is no work being done to make the aire usable, more vans came and left when they saw this than actually stayed the night ,we left the following morning as we felt we were not wanted more council money wasting or are the campsite oweners getting their way :(

It's insane!! It looked completely finished way back in Jun [just needed the service block tapped in] but now it's too late for the 2013 main holiday season.

Good work guys :-/

We stopped at the aire yesterday to have a look and although we parked up for an hour or so while we had a walk we certainly would not feel comfortable staying here overnight . We mostly wild camp and use our instincts if we feel safe we stay if not we drive away , this is what we would do at Portrush Aire .We did not like the public walkways which run along the back of the parking bays and a bus terminal . Its location lends its self to a busy area especially at night .So we will not be adding it to our list Emily & John .

I have been away for a while and missed out on a lot here. Maybe it is time to start telling the people arranging all these aires about the problems. If I remember correctly the representative from the motorhome association was quick enough to call some people on here whingers and then close his account. I see from their website they claim involvement in getting this aires. Instead of us telling each other how bad it is why not tell them by email.

Had another look today.2 motorhomes ,2 church minibuses and 2 work vans..the Aires machine seems to be open.
Below the main info sign there is another showing the whereabouts of all the local caravan sites!..
Quite a few vans parked on street round the town..

True to form then.

If you don't like it here there is a better place up the road which you can pay for.

The Aire is a token gesture to suggest they welcome Motorhome but they actually want them to use campsites.

3 motorhomes using aire in Portrush tonight and a few still seem to be using the outside if Landsdowne also seen one camped up at the bottom of Harbour car park in Portstewart looks like a good spot and no reason not to park that I could see

Visited it briefly myself over the weekend and took a few photographs for information.

Not overly impressed myself. Still being used for coach parking and although I don't need to be entirely level, as can be seen there is a problem for most people. If you want to hook up, I guess everyone will be driving over your lead, or might even unhook it!

I wouldn't stay, but there again I wouldn't park up overnight at Ramore either if it was still available. I just feel it's too vunerable a location for some prat to decide to chuck something at your van. You can zoom in on the photos for a good look.

If you are not sure where this Aire is located, it's close to the Dunluce Centre before the main part of the town. You can see members of the public cutting through the Aire for a shortcut in one of the photos. One of the Motorhomes has what appears to be an expensive generator bungeed on a rack at the back. I' be worried about the temptation of theft with such an open location.

You should not be hooked up unless at the service point. It's not a campsite :)

Last time I was there I approached the coach drivers in a friendly way and explained to them that they should not be parked there, they moved over to the coach spaces.

Park in a car park for £12 for 24 hours.

Alternatively, park in Tollymore Forest Park for 24 hours for £12.00 or £13.50 with 32amp EHU - showers and all the facilities, surrounded by beautiful scenery and walks.

I know where I will be going :)

£12 for Portrush Aire is too much, I went there to empty my toilet and it was empty, not the toilet the Aire.

I was chatting to a lovely man in a motorhome at Donaghadee today. He has been visiting France and other european countries for many years and in recent years only uses Aires. He goes for 4 months at a time and from what he was saying seems to have visited a lot of the country.

He was telling me he had visited the Aire at Portrush and was appaulled at the design and location.
On his first (and only) visit which I think was only a week or two ago he discovered that toilet cassettes cannot be emptied at the bourne but in another part of the carpark. He mentioned the someone had emptied theirs anyway and to use his words "there was sh*t all over it".

I explained that I had not used it but had heard other complaints on here. He mentioned graffitti on walls nearby and the slope of the ground. His ramps were not big enough to get level.
He really had a good old rant and basicly wanted to know who selected the location as he could not remember stopping at a worse planned location in all his travels.

To top it all he didnt even stay in portrush. He drove to Buncrana Donegal...

And before you ask Ally, yes i did mention this site but he doesnt do computers!

I haven't been but my question is " Is it really that bad?"

In the past I have praised Portrush Aire as it is better than nothing and we should make use of it or lose it. But after visiting not that long ago I won't be near it again, except perhaps to empty my toilet on the way through to a nicer place.

Awful place and the gentleman is correct about the cassette emptying and the graffiti, I think I was in support of it as I never parked at Ramore head in a Motorhome so never really missed it. But now looking at Ramore Head and how we were put out of that lovely area close to the town and put into a car park overlooked by apartments and a graffiti clad toilet block I can understand everyone's anger.

The way over the top pricing structure was the final nail in the coffin, I can only assume this was implemented to appease caravan site owners, why pay £12 with no EHU or showers etc when you can go up the road and pay for a site with full facilities. They just don't get it!

Aires in NI:
Carrickfergus - Free
Broughshane - £5
Dongahadee Free
Whitehead Free

Portrush £12.00

Is the idea of an Aire not to support local business? get tourists into that area and hopefully they will spend money on all sorts of things, also spend very little money attracting those tourists in Motorhomes by having the basic facilities of fresh water and somewhere to empty a toilet. Not fancy French styled units that we do not need.

Fresh Water - Access to a sewer = simple and cost effective

Portrush has priced me out, not because I cannot afford £12 to sit beside a graffiti clad toilet block, but for the simple reason I would rather give that £12 to a local business where I can park in a nice area.

Take a look at Donaghadee, beautiful scenery, friendly people, tidy town and the same goes for Broughshane - both great places to stay in and both great places that Motorhomers spend money (fact)

Yet we have "Northern Ireland's Favourite Holiday Resort" the tourist destination for the majority of tourists and we get stuck beside a graffiti clad toilet block, made to pay an over the top charge and treated like "nuisance tourists"

Get a grip!

after the mccni rally in portrush primary school in august i called round to see the new aire
what a let down
2 vans were trying to drain their waste and no matter what they tried the water ran away from the drain due to the slope so waste water was running down the car park.
the slope of the aire is both ways, so not only front to back but also left to right and is sufficient to need ramps so fridge works etc.
it is a local thoroughfare for people walking into the town so many members of the public pass through the area
it is a recognised coach park so especially in the summer there would be little space for vans due to the coach and bus parking.
caravans were using two spaces when i visited and it is forbidden for caravans.
cars were parked in the motorhome bays as it was a busy weekend.

who advised the council to use this location?
who advised on facilities and placement?
if they got the right info why did they ignore it?
was it put there to fail so local campsite owners could say an aire is provided but not used?

however, i was in donaghadee on saturday night with seven other vans no problem at all.
on friday night more vans were there and most were from the north coast!! what does that say......

if i was going to the north coast i would not even consider the new aire, travel on to buncrana, or stay in broughshane, both motor home friendly places with good facilities. or stay at shanogue !

my thoughts on the "facility".......

Thanks guys.

Bob did hit one thing that the man I mentioned had also said. Grey waste disposal was virtually impossible.

Designed to fail then?
Maybe on purpose?

I don't know as I haven't been but it looks like I will give it a miss.

Has anyone on here used it ?

Another point..

No consideration was taken into account by Coleraine Council the fact that Motorhomers would of used a proper situated Aire all year, supporting local business. Caravan sites are closed in the winter and if you want Motorhomers in your area during that time don't punish them for spending money.

Coleraine council have not taken into consideration the fact that Motorhomers use there vans all year round, there town (Portrush)will be the looser due to this pathetic description of an Aires.

Carpark off causway street is the ideal place for an Aires but that would seem to reasonable for a council who are at pains not to annoy the local caravan site owners.

I have no problem going to other towns where we are welcome and spending my money.

I was up in Portrush myself over the weekend and the aire looked mad tbh. My brotherin law has a holiday house on the coleraine road just before metropole so we can park on his drive anytime we are up. I had a quick nosey round at lansdowne and noticed 7 motohomes parked down on the seafront closest to the town side. Whats the story there? Is that stretch exempt form the rest of the carpark or what?

regards

John

I notice they all have disabled badges if that makes a difference.
