More boring stuff.......

It got up to 59 degree's, but it also got to 40 degree's inside the freezer :(

I'm ready for scrapping it but no, the "Fridge guy" says that the fins at the back are very dirty/rusty etc - and it seems it is not getting rid of the heat. He's not giving up :D

So it's coming out of the RV and going to be blasted and cleaned and then tested before it goes back in.

To the rescue once again. Pauls (chevy g20) portable dometic 3-way fridge :) - temporary solution but a thankful one.

Was waiting on whether the fridge was to be removed again before I installed the controls for the new Propex heater. The wiring for the old heater ran up the inside of the walls around the fridge and I wanted to run them in the same place and replace the old thermostat with the new one. As the fridge was removed I did just that.

 


 


Also installed our 2500watt inverter, which now gives me hours of peace and harmony not having to listen to SWMBO about hair dryers and hair straighteners and not being able to use them.

I get the impression, this RV is going to be a keeper Ally?

My upper vanes are worse than yours. Pretty rusty.

I gave my lower unit a rub of a wire brush and a shot of rust-converter which cleaned it up nice. hopefully the converter doesnt mess with the cooling efficiency too much.

Dont know what to do with the uppers after I've de-rusted them. TThey'll only continue to rust if I dont put something on them. I'm sure paint or rust converter will "insulate" them a bit....

I couldn't get at the upper cooling fins without removing the fridge. That'll be a future project. I have too many jobs underway at the moment to start on another. Need to get some of them ticked off the list before I start another one! Mine seems to work on propane but not on 12v or 230v so I'll get around to solving that. I am scared to death of this fridge though. I've read too many horror stories on the ol interweb about ammonia/hydrogen leaks and fireballs!

Most definitely. I/we are loving it, always liked classics and it's just that much different than everything else on the road. Not too big that it's too much (for me) on Irish roads yet loads of room inside. Low mileage, great engine, chassis is great and don't tell anyone on here, I'm a bit sick of inferior made, lightweight Euro boxes. Prone to damp and creaky furniture with knobs that break off in your hands and wood that was made from a weetabix box. As I say, don't tell anyone I said that, I may go back to one at a later date. Our 1990 Pilote was better built than some of the stuff around now.

I've made a decision this morning, without the fridge guy, I'm scrapping it. It's 27 years old, having problems now so what will it be like in the future, and also the safety concerns you mention. I half knew that if it came right out of the van it wasn't going back in again.

Drilled up from the new Battery Box (old generator box) to below the seat.

 


Placed the inverter behind the door in the luggage area, SWMBO can run an extension lead over to the mirror when using it, but I might install a permanent socket from the inverter at a later date. As it's not an expensive one, it needs to be switched off after use, so it's fine how it is for now. A simple install really.

 


I'll do as usual and start the engine 30 seconds before switching it on and leave the engine running for a minute after turning it off. With a dedicated Alternator going direct to the Leisure batteries with 100amps I don't foresee any drain.

Yours will be different if its a low wattage one. Mine is 2500watts and has heavy removeable cables that connect on the back, either to be connected up via large crocodile clips or wired direct to the batteries. Mine is wired permanently to the batteries.

Saved the wood from the doors of the fridge for either, the new fridge and boxing and trimming in around it as it'll be smaller. Or for future needs as obviously it matches the rest of the RV.

So big question what fridge are you thinking of fitting. A regular domestic fridge or something motorhome dedicated.

Getting there, this is it's best side. Other side might need professionally cleaned, I was considering wrapping it, but if it all comes up as good as this, before any polish is applied, I'd be happy :D

Early days, I need to do a lot more testing. But I would say it's doing 20mpg and maybe slightly more. It's certainly driving a lot better after a few long runs, a lot more power than at the start, seems free'er.

You will ruin it if you wrap it. There is a guy about Banbridge who did an excellent job polishing stuff out on my PRG Trailer. I think I’ve got his number somewhere.

Three way. I know some that use compressor fridges but we are never plugged in. Don't see how we would power one.

6 x 90 AH = 540 AH :/

🤔 So 540 Ah, allowed to discharge to 270 (50%). Would power a 20Ah/ day compressor fridge for 13.5 days in between charges. But gotta allow overhead for other loads, lights, pumps, tv, offset by solar and alternator charging. Maybe a week between charges? Could be doable

Or instead of buying a costly 3 way, you could "amp up" (pun intend) on the number of solar panels on the roof...

You have tons more storage capacity in that locker for lots more batteries too...

I had a look at integrated fridges a few weeks ago for our camper Ally. 100% mains powered. The only one the same width as our oul Dometic 660 was a 70/30 Electrolux ENN2801EOV and available in harvey Norman. With a rated "Annual Energy Consumption" of 291kwh (calculated down to 33watts), thats pretty good if my maths are correct. It doesnt say what the starting current is unfortunately. I sent an email to Electrolux asking what the starting current was for that particular model, but I havent received a reply yet. I'll let you now if they come back to me.

€529 retail.

500 for fridge, £680 for batteries, although I have three already.

I can get a small absorption fridge for £650 (no freezer)

There was one in Currys too, i cant remember why we didn't like the look of that one, but it was cheaper at €300

I'd probaly have to hack my cabinets no matter what I do as most of these fridges are in the 1.7m height range. That'd suck.

I do like the idea of having a full size 70/30 though... the icebox in our dometic aint great.

I had a look at integrated fridges a few weeks ago for our camper Ally. 100% mains powered. The only one the same width as our oul Dometic 660 was a 70/30 Electrolux ENN2801EOV and available in harvey Norman. With a rated "Annual Energy Consumption" of 291kwh (calculated down to 33watts), thats pretty good if my maths are correct. It doesnt say what the starting current is unfortunately. I sent an email to Electrolux asking what the starting current was for that particular model, but I havent received a reply yet. I'll let you now if they come back to me.
