How the f##k can they come up with those numbers for VRT?

To be liable for VAT it needs to be new (<6 months old or <6k km) or imported from outside the EU.

VAT is charged at a higher rate than VRT so VRT should be less than VAT.

You should be appealing that VRT figure. Whatever about plucking values from their own hole for second hand vans, for a new van it should be on the invoice price.

Anyone know if you buy a van outside of the country in the EU, then after two years of touring, you bring it home and register it in Ireland, how long have you to hold onto it, before you can sell it?

But If you are retired and have a property abroad say France or Spain, where you pay your property taxes etc so can buy and register the Van there. then travel around for a couple of years and come home to your Irish home to stay put for a while. your basically bringing your only vehicle home with you.?

Retired is all good but they'll want to see utility bills and consumption of gas / electric for example, they'll want to see bank statements and withdrawals in the country of residence. They've seen every angle tried when it comes to this exemption, they know what to look for.

As you may know Matilda is offiacially scrap. I have been looking around France in paticular, But has anyone any idea what is the new import tax on second hand motorhomes likely to be.
I have my eye on a 2005 Hymer Tramp 655: Fiat Ducato 2.8 L 127cv Has anyone any insight into the motorhome or enging ?

Last I heard you were putting on new panels Martin. Sorry to hear she is scrap. Anyway, is it not just a straightforward VRT at 13.5% of the fair market value, as deemed by revenue? We are in a customs union and there’ll be no VAT on an older vehicle.

I understand that bit, but there were changes at budget time that come in on 1st January to do with EU emissions and rate band changes.

Martin I don’t think the NOx charges apply to Motorhomes so just the more standard 13.3 % tip off.

The 2002 - 2006 Ducato 2.8 uses an Iveco engine and it's pretty bombproof. The 5th. gear issue of the pre-2002 Ducatos has also been addressed.
My own 2005 JTD Power 144cv version has given over 130k km's of trouble-free hard work and returns about 25 MPG (it's an A-class with the aerodynamics of a garden shed).
Make sure you get a reliable report of when the timing belt was last done and if there is any doubt budget in a replacement.

The 2.8L engine is great, I had 2 vans with that engine and no problems, Hymer are a good brand too
I wonder if a service history comes with the van, best of luck with the van hunt

Anything to be said for finding another Sprinter and kitting it out with 'Matildas bits'! A lockdown project. Maybe the hassle and the roulette wheel VRT makes it unattractive or maybe you just fancy an upgrade.

It is an option I'm considering , but need secure indoor storage close to home, and also very hard to get someone people to answer questions on their adverts.
I was looking at a Hymer in France but its sold.

Hi all still researching and see a few of these which would suite, there appears to be a lot of the used as fridge vans.
Nissan NV400 2012 2.3d LWB twin wheel. I'm informed that they are also badged as Renault Master.
I've never seen a Nissan NV 400 campervan, but have seen the Renault master version.

So any info good or bad especially high mileage ones, as most on sale have between 150k and 250k.

Cant speak for high mileage vans or even the Nissan, Martin. we have the Renault Master, probably the older model 2008 with less than 40000 miles. I was very sceptical buying it having had a Renault Laguna Car also with low mileage which was the greatest ball of sh1t ever made. Thankfully the master Proved to be the total opposite, extremely reliable in the nearly 6 years we have it and a miser on diesel compared to the under powered Ducato that we had. Our one is the 150 DCI and is very lively.

anyone with experiance?
I would prefer a fiat or Merc but I dont want to reduce the available market even less.

My previous van was a Knaus on a Renault chasis and I would def take another on the Renault, it just seemed to drive better, more economical and cheaper as well as easier to work at compared to Ducato/Boxer alternatives. The Merc's are more expensive to buy than the others

Yes John, Pats, is probably the same engine boosted up to 150, my concern is would the 120 be under a bit of pressure, I have driven Renaults all my life, Had several 1.9 and the present 1.5 has well over 200k on it, but none pulling around 3500kg all the time.

Are you in hurry? 120 will get you there and you’ll see much more especially on big hills! I’d be happy with 120 in a MH unless I wanted it as a daily driver.

Ducato 2.8 idtd has 122 bhp and the 2.8 jtd has 128 bhp

Peak power is only going to be available at high revs probably somewhere around 3500rpm, there may not be that much difference between the 120 and 150 at normal MoHo revs.

Exactly right. I'd be more interested in peak Torque band figures as thats where you'll be spending 99% of the time.

So....Renault 120 dci has exact same torque output as Ducato but at 300 revs lower :up:

My Knaus had the 120Dci and I can say it was not lacking in power, it was very responsive, never found I had to change down going up a hill
