This is an interesting topic.

I was wondering if anyone knows when the roads across the alps (France into Italy) are free of ice/snow.
I would NOT consider buying winter tyres so therefore can only go when the weather would be good enough to go without them.

Specifically I am wondering if the roads are good enough in March. I think some of the ski resorts are still open in March.
I am not interested in the skiing but more interested in making a break down to south of Italy - like where the sun :-) and warm weather will be.
Thanks :)

Some camper tyres are mud and snow (M&S) check as you probably are running on them already,

You are absolutely correct. My tyres are M&S marked. Never knew that!
Still would prefer no snow on the roads when going over there though :)
But I think the roads will be OK in March - ie the roads will be clear but better to check what it is like nearer to the date.

Happy days   at least if the roads are clear I think the M&S tyres still cover you should police check,

Take the dogs they will love it, I'm so glad that in 2012 we took Molly to Spain she never flinched the whole journey and had a ball once we got to the house. Now we have the photos and videos of her jumping into the pool after a ball.

Still brings tears to my eyes thinking about her

Ah sure tip bits won't do the dog any harm as we have them ourselves.

So tonight there has been an extended family conference at the kitchen table!
Update on our plans ...
Boat to France on 15th July ...
16th July stay at aire in Le Mans
Very early start next am to get us to Italy side of Mont Blanc, stay at campsite 'camping monte bianco' from 17th -21st July
The next few days are not planned yet but we plan to be at Lake Garda by Friday 25th, we have found a small site on the lake called 'Eurocamping pacengo lake Garda.' We plan to stay here until 5th August when we will drive on to livigno (North Italy). My brother is flying out to us on 1st August for 10 days & he wants us to go to livigno, he knows the area very well & hopes that we will be able to ski on the glacier in August!
While at Garda we want to visit theme parks but also travel to Venice.
We may not end up going much further south into Italy but where we go after 10th August is still up for debate!
The other thing that has been heavily debated is bringing the dog (for any of you that know us, Polly, our fluffy white ball with 3 legs) ... For any of you that bring your dog what do you do with it during the day? We do plan to be away from the van for extended periods e.g. Going to visit Venice for the day ... We have a long lead that she can be on outside the van but how safe is she? Your opinions/ideas are welcome!
Jill

Hi Jill,

The plan is starting to form.We brought our dog with us to France 1 year,we never left her on her own and brought her with us,even in to restaurants, the Europeans think more of their dogs then their kids,i think it would be frowned upon leaving a dog tied up,with long leads they tend to get caught up in things. It also gets very hot at that time of the year as you know, and our dog found it very hard to cope with the heat.hope this helps some.

When we were at eurodisney most of the vans had a dog tied to them & lying under the van ...
Are dogs welcome on public transport in Italy?

Take her with you, keep her on the lead until that's not practical and then put her into a carrier bag and carry her ( I mean one designed for dogs, not a tesco bag for life)

hi hunters, prob too late but for what its worth, we went from derry to san remo via austria then back through southern france and french alps finishing with disney last year with 3 kids. We went through chunnel and stopped at cite de europe carpark. Shopped and filled tank then headed to Luxembourg city. We went via Belgium and paid no tolls (non in belgium or lux.) Luxembourg city is lovely and there is a safe parking area in customs post carpark in city with cheap bus to town centre. Filled up on diesel (cheapest in europe) before leaving Lux then drove via frieburg before staying in Freidrichshafen for 4 days. Lovely town on lake constance and a great area. We went ty Hymer museum (1 hour from Freidrichshafen) for a day and it is amazing for any camper fans, our kids loved it and was a highlight of the trip. Then we drove via Austria (15E vignette required but no tolls) into sudtirol for some high alps cycling for me. Then we headed down to Garda where we stayed in a campsite in Lazcise for 5 days (not booked in advance) lovely area but busy and campsites are expensive. There is a great aire in Sirmione right on lake though that is worth checking out. (Gardaland is just OK, not a patch on disney). Then San Remo for a very hot but relaxing week on the Italian Riviera. Caution though VERY expensive diesel in Italy but if you fill in Austria you will be OK till you get to France as we did. Then we meandered back through France via alpes for more cycling and disney for a blast. Teaching hols are great!! :D

Teaching hols are the best & mine start this Friday!! :)
We haven't posted in ages but with only a week to go before I get off school we're doing a little holiday organising in the house today (while Bryan watches football!)
Have just booked our season passes for Gardaland (looked at all the prices & this worked out the best for us), we are going to be in the area for nearly 2 weeks so that'll keep us busy a few evenings!
The campsite I have booked at Lake Garda is 1.5km (or so it says on their website!) from Gardaland.
Feeling excited!!

Work & life just so busy in May & June, we had no time for MH or MHcraic ... will get on the case this week.
Dog passport nearly sorted today, has been an easy enough process ... Dog went to vet & got all her injections up to date & got rabies jab & spray for kennel cough. Then completed one page application on line. Called to vet today to collect passport to collect, it is there, they just haven't got it all filled out so I'll call again later in the week. So far it has cost me £70 (but some of that is routine injections she would have been getting anyway). For those in the know does this sound about right or have I been stroked!!?

That's more than we paid  but less than others, I think it's about right. Make sure they put all the dates on the passport for when drugs issued and especially when the rabies expires, they forgot one on ours but we got through okay as they had all only been issued. Just remember the tablet for coming home has to be given within a certain timed window don't get it in Calais get it at least a day away from port it will be cheaper that way as the port vets are very expensive and insist you get the drops for lice etc, it isn't required.
