Vinyl roof's were popular back then....I never liked them and they all had rust forming at an alarming rate with moisture trapped underneath....

For the most part, it just meant the roof kept pace with the sills and arches

In the 70s I had a Ford Corsair 2000E automatic, metallic gold with black vinyl roof. Beautiful car I'd love to have it back. It was still being taxed just over 20 years ago so maybe someone still has it. PMI 930 was the number, if you see it around take a few photos for me. :-)

They were great to camouflage a car that went on the roof back in the day especially if you fitted a sunroof, you probably wouldn’t know anything about that John😉
I had a 1979 Vauxhall Vx2300gls Automatic in blue with a black vinyl roof in the 80’s, wouldn’t mind having it now either

I had a light blue Polonez which I bought in an auction in Glasgow. My young son was embarrassed to sit in it. No problems except for the drivers seat which was so rigid it gave me backache.

The "Baby Lakes" (aka Historic Rally of the Lakes) is on in Killarney next weekend if anyone wants to see old cars being driven at stupid speeds.

From looking at the Road Closing orders, it's Molls Gap (some room to park), Ballaghbeama (very little room to park) and a variation of Caragh Lake (some room to park). I'm thinking of heading down and finding a place to park up the evening before.

It took us to the South of France a few times. I had the spare wheel mounted on the booth with a cover (Rover 2000 style) to make room inside the booth for the frame tent (ex Eurocamp hire)
Those were the days 😁

I only ever remember them in Black, it’s big sister was the Triumph Renown, looked more like a Rolls Royce.

The first car I remember my father having was a Hillman Hunter, more or less the same car but without the luxurious vinyl roof and no doubt a little more spartan on the inside too. If that's your actual car in the picture, the colour was pretty close to that too.

Hillman hunter, handbrake next to the door… 1725cc had twin stombergs that you couldn’t keep balanced. Wouldn’t pull a greasy stick out of a dogs a**.

Maxi, as an apprentice one of my first jobs was changing a set of gear change cables on one… my got it was a terrible design.
The maxi had the possibility of being great, first true hatchback….. pity Austin/BL management tied the designers hands insisting they used the same doors as the 1800 ‘landcrab’ as a cost cutting measure, that relegated it obsolete almost at conception, something Alex Issigonis never forgave them for and really was the beginning of the end of his involvement with them. His original design for the maxi had a much more modern rake to the windscreen with doors that had a lower glass line and would have been as radical as his mini design… pity they couldn’t envisage his brilliance. Their version of a facelift maxi was a stupid big grille on the vanden Plas.

Great memories though, bad as they were those cars had character that is sadly lacking in todays computer generated cyborgs.

The maxi had the possibility of being great, first true hatchback….. Maybe not!

I owned two Renault 16s in my day and they were brilliant hatchbacks, in seconds the back seat could either fold down or lift out completely. One of mine, a TX, had soft leather seats and electric windows and an engine that was used in the Lotus Europa. But they did rust and are now very rare.

Over and over and over. The new Mini by BL/Austin/Morris/Rover was surprisingly like the BMW Behemoth only smaller. But never made it to production.

They had an opportunity to keep the Mini up to date and keep selling to this day, as BMW have done. But BL et all could of been changing it slowly, redesigning, making it owly better and up to the latest technologies in 2000. But no, after 8 different versions, or was it 9?
It was practically the same rusty shell as it was in September 1959.

Yep, my car, I had it for a good few years during which time I did an engine rebuild, rebore and crank regrind.
The Sceptre was quite high spec for its day, a twin headlight grill, twin Strombergs, freeflow exhaust and overdrive on 3rd. and 4th. gear. and would cruise happily, fully loaded with three children and all the camping gear plus roof box, at 80mph along the motorways of France, we had none here then.
Inside the dash was walnut with circular dials, velour seats which were twin bucket seats in the back with an armrest/cubby box between. it was in effect a softly sprung four-seater vehicle.

When the third child came along I replaced the twin rear seats with a bench seat from a Hunter and when the soft original rear springs started to break up I replaced them with Hunter Estate springs to carry all the camping gear.

Ah yes, I remember it well ^_^

I was more of a Diesel Man myself, My first Car was a Morris marina 1.8, it was a suicide Car could get into a speed wobble all of a sudden, I cured it by fitting a BMC 1.5 Diesel engine into it, I don't know if it was the heavier engine or lack of power , I never had a problem with it afterwards. We used to convert a lot of cars to Diesel back then , Mainly Triumph 2000 / 2500's and Hunters.
