Just to reiterate, but the wattage rating is irrelevant (almost). The figure you need is the average energy used over a known period of time i.e. kIlo-Watt-hours per so many days. Then you can work out how many watts it will consume per day. Convert this to how many Amp-hours per day. Then work out how many days you can run this befor discharging your battery to 50% , 135Ah in your case. Then cut back on this figure as you need battery for other appliances too.

I’m not sure about that.
If I remember Ally, you have 3 90 Ah batteries. So 270 Ah. Recommend discharge to 50% max =135 Ah.
Now at best if fridge is 108 watts (yes, I picked this number for simplicity) Now for the math..
108/12volts = 9 amps. That’s what a fridge rated at 108 watts will draw while running.
135/9 =15 hours.
That’s how long your 3, 90 Ah leisure batteries will operate the fridge. Now obviously your fridge will not be running continually, then again opening it for cans of Carlsberg every 15 minutes, means it will be operating a lot of it 😳, but you will have to decide if that’s ok for you. Even if fridge runs 33% that’s 45 hours, without heating, TV, lights, etc. etc.
Now if fridge is 216 watts... half all the above 😳.

No worries Daffy but the wattage is irrelevant. That will only tell you what the power consumption is when the compressor is running. The compressor runs intermittently. The instantaneous power or current consumption tells you nothing other than what size cables and fuses to spec for. The total energy consumed over a day is what matters. My figures are correct.

Example: Dometic CRX65. Energy consumption @35C = 0.29952kWh/24h

Pardon me if I round that figure to 300Wh per day. So 300Wh divided by 12.7 volts = 23Ah.

This will run for nearly 6 days before discharging the 270Ah battery to 50%

Uhm, but Ally said he had got hold of a normal household fridge... not the glorified cool box that you are basing your figures on. I have seen one of those, and that is what it is. A standard domestic fridge is rated at power consumption between 27 and 35 % run time, depending on manufacturers

That’s why I’d be interested to know the energy consumption of Ally’s fridge. I have compared domestic fridge consumption figures. From what I see you can pick up a fairly cheap under counter jobby with with close enough consumption figures to the Dometic. Bottom line is I would expect you can run a domestic compressor fridge for days off a battery with suitable capacity. Whether that is 2, 3 or 4 days obviously depends.

Would a domestic fridge take the shaking being fitted to a camper would entail??

That's what I'd be concerned about. The last domestic fridge I bought said to leave it for up to 24 hours after transport before using it. This is to let the gas settle our something to that effect.

Good question. And also noise levels. Are compressor fridges marketed for Motorhomes quieter than domestic counterparts? Or is it just clever marketing that adds a big premium? Perhaps any craicers running domestic fridges on their rigs can let us know how that is going.

I have very little faith it'll be any good using a domestic fridge, but it's all good fun :) - doubt the batteries will be damaged as the inverter would cut off before that happens?

That will depend on what your inverter is set to cut out at. If 11.4 like mine that’s a serious drain on the batteries.

He said "look for A+ or A++ rated".

I didn't bother with the compressor fridge, I just knew it wasn't going to work and with SWMBO breathing down my neck about a fridge I bit the bullet and ordered a 3-way Thetford one.

Christmas is cancelled, Easter is cancelled, next years holidays are cancelled and I'm away to hide in a cupboard under the stairs until I get over the shock, I may be sometime.

I feel your pain Ally, Motorhome fridge's are stupid expensive for what they are o.O ......The upside is now you'll have cold beer in the Motorhome! :D

And you taught setting up MHCC was going to put you under some problems and there you were with all the pressure you could have, living under the same tin roof.all for the sake of a few cool ones. :o

You may jest, but...

Our last one was a Thetford and we replaced the main board in it twice. That model has been superseded now though. Because of the faults I was going to buy a Dometic which is the same as Norcold (btw they blow up often), but I found as many faults with them as with the Thetford. So "you pays your money and takes your chance"

Ain’t that the truth. Thetford definitely a decent bit cheaper anyway. Tbh I think the older thetford may not have been up to par with dometic, but now there is not much between them. Just watch the warranty. I have 3 years on new dometic, as it was fitted by dealer, but if I had got it fitted myself, would only have 2 years
