I bought a brand new dinghy that will reside on the roof, 3 wetsuits & 3 HH fitted life jackets for mine, then went to the storage facility it's been in for 4 months while we have been in Kazakhstan only to find the brand new batteries dead as dodo's even though they were on a newly fitted isolator switch and most of the engine oil out of it on the ground underneath the rear after a full mechanical service 100 miles before she was parked up........

I just dunno......

These yokes really are sent to test us hey?!?

That's a bugger, John!

Are you sure everything is isolated and you had the switch turned off?
Why did the oil leak, was it through the sump stud?

Sounds like the mechanic has not tightened something either the sump lug or the oil filter. As for the batteries no idea why they should be flat if they were isolated

Yep, all isolated properly but probably not wired properly by the company who installed it as the first of the two has already taken a nice slow charge over night!!!

Similarly, there was 200 or so trouble free miles since the service was done so it's a slow drip from either the sump plug or the filter, clothes were too good, spirits were too low and jet lag still prevailed yesterday! Were in the MIL's until Thursday before the adventure starts, I'm gone to Dublin to do a few gigs and see friends, gonna send a commercial derv mechanic over to it tomorrow to take a closer look. It was BONE DRY before it left Birdhill a few months ago... That I am certain of!!! Grrrrrr........

We'll get it sorted but someday... Things will go smoothly for me I'm sure................

Yes Broms - Drove to work today and the wheel stayed on :D
The bruises are easing and replacement Wrenches have been ordered as i bent loads of them
Next Weekend- perhaps the bearings other side and back, then new shock absorbers all round and a Camber test. Loving it

Got the lights set UK style today - so we are ready for the Re-MOT on Wednesday night.

I used the light deflectors - they are not the best in the world at bending light but stop it going across into the oncoming traffic. Thanks Millions Philip White Tyres in Belfast - BRILLIANT and Absolute Gentleman - RECOMMEND <_<

The garage rang me to say they can't source a clutch cable for me - so I think a trip to Dublin tomorrow to get one custom made if I can. I am rapidly running out of time to get everything done before i head off to the UK at the end of the month.

Is it a Hymer or Fiat part? If it is Hymer the Garage probably wouldn't have a clue where to source it, you would be better off looking for it yourself.

Thanks folks I ended up travelling to Rathcoole with the snapped cable to a company called Cablecraft. Top bloke and couldn't be more helpful and only charged me ten euro. Can heartedly recommend him for any sort of cable issue.

Best thing though is within an hour of returning the cable to the garage I was driving the van home. Yes it is back on the road again LOL. Spent the evening finishing of some electrical wiring i was doing before it went in for the rebuild. Going to fit 2*100w semi flexible solar panels tomorrow and the dustbin lid sized TV antenna tomorrow :D Got more electrical bits and pieces to install as well but boy am i pleased to have it back again.

Bought more tax today. It wasn't due until the end of the month but thought I would get it now as the phone taxing line is busy towards the end of the month. It took almost 20 minutes in the phone queue.
Although unfortunately some people are loosing their jobs with the transfer of the tax office from Coleraine to Swansea, I can't wait until the 21st of July when it happens, so that tax can be purchased on line, paid for by monthly direct debit or credit card, without the massive premium we currently pay for the 6 month option over the 12 month, there is a premium but much smaller.

Not only Coleraine, all the County Hall Tax offices. But I agree it was an antiquated system, why they didn't update it...., suppose so they could sack everyone and give the jobs to the English/Welsh.

Had two new front tyres fitted today. Fitted the new dustbin lid sized antenna as well - was dubious about drilling holes in a 21 year old motorhome roof. Got to say it received all the Irish channels without any problems at all. Fitted a SOG unit as well today. All in all its been a busy day LOL, solar panels tomorrow if it stays dry and some useful electrical stuff to wire. Hopefully that will see the end of it and I can actually get out and use it before I head off to England for a month!

How do they recommend you secure the antenna to the roof? Phil. Ie. how do you know if there is wood under the roof sheet or is it screwed to a plate under the ceiling ?

It's held in place by Sikaflex and six screws - no plate underneath - I tired to pick up the cross member from the skylight. It seems to be solid although I guess meeting some low trees will be the proof of how well it is fitted.

Don't worry about it. Any time I do a job like that I think it might not be as good as getting a professional to do it but the truth is you may be more careful and spend more time doing it yourself.

If you are capable of doing all the other jobs you mentioned I would imagine the ariel will withstand anything it meets.

Hi Broms, I got a longer than standard Speedo cable installed/
The Alfa Romeo has the same speedo connection at the clock as in Hessy and i got in on the WWW handy enough.I moved the Hazard switch and alarm lights to the dash area to leave a double din socket if needed (DVD Player) at the stereo install area = so when i was in the dash area routing around - i snapped the nylon collar and got a longer one just in case i was needed in there for lights etc.
Good luck - like to see pictures of installation???

For a still unknown reason, our RV fell backwards off its air stabilisation stilts (everything done as per instructions and as per every time before) and broke 3 out of the 4 rams in the wrong direction... I'm obviously still getting over it here but looks like our dream summer back home is in serious jeopardy... Btw only a tree stump behind us stopped us from going over the ditch and down a 30ft drop behind as it fell rearward- damage there for sure but unseen as yet. I heard the initial creaking and jumped onboard to pump a totally unprimed air brake in the most futile of fashions..... :-(

Large American RV (now static mobile home) with a 12 month old total refit, for sale in Garretstown House Campsite - no offer refused....... Just had enough..... :-(

Very sorry to hear that John! The story is bad but it could be a lot worse, some one could have been injured or even Killed. I know you are very peed off at the moment but don't make any rushed decision and throw it away. Pull it out, access the damage and can you isolate the hydraulics and use it like a Normal Motorhome.

John, I've replied to your shout on FB, but if you need help give me a call on 087-395-5129. (temporary number until my own phone is fixed).

That's bad luck. Hopefully the damage isn't too bad and just removing the rams will be all you need to get you on the road again.

If you need heavy duty help, I'd recommend SOS recovery. Sean O'Sullivan, 086 323 0790
http://www.sos24hrrecovery.ie
No bother to them in moving our camper a couple of years back. And having looked at their website, they are well used to recovering very large vehicles (trucks & coaches).

Take a couple of pics and show us whats going on underneath.

Surely you've used up all your bad luck by now and things should start to improve for you... :(

Thanks Pat & Kevin. Had a big fry up in Kinsale this morning with some great coffee, then took to the ocean with my boys surfing, paddle boarding, and general frolicking - then a lovely Barbeque and some beers with friends. I just totally forgot about it and enjoyed the day.

Everything still lurks beneath and a heavy commercial specialist is bringing down 4 airbags to get her lifted hopefully enough to right (I doubt that) or remove the air jacks tomorrow at lunchtime. I'm thinking it's ok to lie a little skew ways in the bed now.....

Modern comms are almost non existent down here in Garretstown. Pics tomorrow when she's elevated...... Hopefully. Thanks again.

The only way is up... >_<

Thanks a lot folks! A great firm called "Tidy Truck Services" spent the day here yesterday from early morning and thanks to an amazing set of huge lifting air bags and two very committed fellows we finally got the bus high enough to right the direction of the rams! Two at the front are perfect but both at the rear are written off unfortunately. These two lads who specialise in hydraulic lifting systems for commercial vehicles were amazed at how light they are compared to the 16 tons of truck they lift.

Anyway, we have no self levelling but we are back moving again, which makes me & my boys very happy indeed... Mom arrives from Kazakhstan for a few weeks holidays on Friday and we are sure we will all have a great time. Even with all it's trouble it's a brilliant thing and I'm still delighted we bought it.

One word of earning though to anyone thinking of buying one. Make sure you don't live 10k kms away when buying one and the hand over is being done back home with a friend of yours. I must admit done of the more serious issues I've had are down to me chancing my arm with its systems and not always guessing everything the right way!!!

Anyway - a few grands worth of learning later... I think I've most things learned now.... :-)

Are you going to replace the damaged ones or live without. Would a set of wheel chocks have prevented the roll or was it one of those things

A company like Burnside engineering in Bagnalstown, Co. Carlow might be able to help you, they manufacture new Rams!

Thanks Pat! I'll tell the lads from Tidy. They were going to try fabricate new rams or have them done - maybe even by your crew in bagnalstown.
FC - the chocs were present but as the rams had gone up skyward with the bus and was in the levelling process (only after all that do you dump the suspension air to bring the whole thing, now levelled downward to sit into the Choc space)it was just one if those things! I really can't explain it but as I've eluded to earlier there, I'm certainly not saying I wasn't at fault somehow. Probably, I was....
