Part finally arrived from Italy (Plastic mounting plate due to having a ridged roof)
So refitted roof light and extractor fan then found
TV aerial was mounted on a bit of WOOD which blocked one of the ridges so any rain water would sit there so
Made new mounting plate to completely fill the water filling channel from an old pvc window board
refitted aerial then
Refitted reversing camera after making plastic block to take camera above high level brake light
Knacked now kills my legs several hours standing on a ladder.

Funny enough there is a company in Germany that will send it over on a RoRo ship from Liverpool or Bremerhaven I think it is - cost is €1500 each way
Would it not be cheaper and less hassle to buy a camper over there and then sell it when you are returning home ? Enjoy the trip as I'm sure you will and don't forget regular reports for us lesser mortals left behind.

We need 'campervan cam' so we can follow the adventure - a 24 hour live feed that we can all watch and wish it were us. Go on, you know you want to.

Not really - part of the fun of it is taking my van there in the first place at least if i take mine (when the engine os sorted out) i know what I am going to get if I buy out there then it will be a further journey into the unknown
As for a camper cam - so long as i am not it it will be okay LOL - the dog (my four legged kind) is very photogenic and would be sure to star in any films made!

Hi Broms, What base vehicle have you, Mercedes or Fiat. you say Hungary is cheaper than Ireland, are you sure you are comparing like with like, there can be a big difference in the cost of rebuilding an engine, depending what you do to it and if one use genuine parts and the other use spurious parts. The cost of the parts should not be much different but different vat rates might alter the cost a bit.

Re: The..... What did you do to your Motorhome today thread!
Hi - 1993 Fiat Ducato 2.5td (the rest of the motorhome is fine) for less then €3000 i am getting a full engine strip down and remanufacture, as is the fuel pump, turbo, new clutch, gearbox strip down and rebuild, new injectors, timing belt and water pump (all with genuine parts). The gentleman doing the work is the father of a very good friend (who lives in Ireland) and runs a chain of garages in Hungary. The cost of just an engine rebuild here in Ireland ranges from €3250+vat to over €4000+vat and that does not include any of the additional work listed. Courier cost for the engine and gearbox is €300 return so to be honest its a no brainer - I simply can't afford to get all of that work done here in Ireland and in light of my travel plans I would rather get things sorted out once and for all and then have no (hopefully!) major worries when I am on the road. The biggest saving comes from labour charges I believe.

There's no doubt servicing etc is much cheaper in Hungary. A 36000 mike service in a Citroen franchised dealer in UK is about £650. In Hungary at an approved Citroen dealer is 320 euros. Why such a difference?

It's down to the rate they pay the workers, Angela got some dental work done a few years ago and it was a fifth of the cost of getting it done in the UK including the cost of getting there!

I agree with you guy's about the labour, but I personally would not send an engine over to Hungary for a rebuild, what when they open it and you get an email saying your cylinder head is knackered and we need a further €900 then things will get out of hand and you have no warrenty, are you going to send the motorhome over if something go's wrong. I bought four new tyres for an Audi off of Eire tyres from Germany a few years ago and one gave trouble and I had to replace it. If I bought them down the road I would have got a replacement free of charge and they would have worked out cheaper.

Pat you could get a call here saying the head was cracked as well. But I agree with you about the warranty things go wrong all the time even with brand new
But hopefully it will all work out well in Hungary.

Ken, I am not trying to be a spoiler sport, I just want to make sure Phil is aware of all the pit falls before he spends that amount of money.
Phil, Another thing seen that the Motorhome is 21 years old and they spend much of their time by the sea, make sure that that the chassis is not rusted, no point in spending €3000 on an engine to find that it will not pass the test. Talking about tests there are surely Motorhomes out there with very low mileage of your vintage that have failed the test due to rust and the engines might be bought for a few hundred euro, just another option worth thinking about. you are probably safe enough, seen that it's your friends Father you are dealing with but make sure that you dot all your I's and cross all your T's first and I wish you the best of look with whatever you decide.
started to take off the front lower crossmember as its rotten, took the front wheels off and waxoyled the arches, noticed the tyres are cracked on the sidewalls.....feck.....

Pat - I did think long and hard about doing this and the amount of money its going to cost me. There is very little rust on the chassis and it is solid underneath which was the deciding factor for me - having seen the engine bay with the engine out things look pretty good to be honest. The rest of the van is okay and the niggly stuff has been sorted out already. There is an unlimited European warranty on the engine and gearbox - hopefully it won't be required. if i stud a second hand lump in it I don't know what I am getting whereas I do with this work. As I said the other factor is the amount I would have to pay here to get the work done.
Will keep you posted on whats happening - but the van should be back on the road by the 19th of May (fingers crossed!)

Hubby fixed my little animals from falling all over the place. Collect one from the garden center beside the garage in Sligo every time we pass, about twice a year.
