This is one of the ‘tongue in cheek’ posters doing the rounds regarding Galways attitude to motorhomes. Says it all really, like Sprinter says, unless you’ve got grounds to go there it’s best to give it a wide berth and spend your money in an area that welcomes you & the motorhoming fraternity.

The ‘tongue in cheek’ comment is meant to convey our disgust at the attitude Galway are adopting.
The sign isn’t up in Galway, rather a ploy on their take as perceived by our community.
The harbour hotel €8 for 24 hours. Have not stayed myself but hear it's safe.
Not anymore, they all (motorhomers) got notices on their windows.

I have a feeling the harbour hotel is a different place to the harbour where the notices were on the windows, Anyone know better?

And when you phone the Galway tourist office you get someone from the Dublin call center who will pass on the contact by EMAIL for them to come back but could suggest the Salthill Caravan park but couldn't confirm that they were open this time of year

Update re Galway. This is kind of a ‘workaround solution’ but it worked (so far). We stayed last night (Friday night) at the Truck Stop beside Galway Plaza. Galway Plaza is the last services on the M6 heading into Galway. It’s 30 mins from City Centre. There is a big level parking area. There were only 3 trucks. Space for about 30 or more. There is a super clean and warm toilet, with a sink area for the truckers. Outside there is a water tap with reasonably long hose. It was fairly quiet all night. At 7 am I took photos of the camper at the plaza. Then I drove this morning to the cathedral car park and parked here at 7:30 am. Taking up 2 spaces. I parked inside the lines, and left all blinds open and light on. I paid for 2 spaces at 7:30 am. Waited until 8:30 am, and no warden appeared. Went shopping and just came back to van (10:30 am). Warden appears and almost
Ran over to the camper. He checked the 2 tickets on my window closely, then walked around the van checking I am inside the lines, and then went off checking other cars. So far so good. I walked all around this car park at 8am and there is not a single sign saying campers not allowed. If he gave me an overnight parking ticket, I have my time stamped photo from the plaza at 7am. So I was ready for them. As parking here is free after 18:30 this evening and all day tomorrow, I would chance staying tonight to see what happens, but I still have this fast draining battery. Let’s see if the solar can get it up to 50% by tonight, otherwise will head to Mayo
Thanks for the update Michael, still sad to see the warden rushing over to the van thinking he could have his ‘pound of flesh’ and thinking he could ticket you.
Imagine an overseas visitor without the knowledge we collectively have, they’d have been done for sure.

Thanks for the update Michael,

I wonder Jon, it’s quite possible he might be instructed to turn a blind eye to foreign vans, imagine the grief in trying to recoup a fine from overseas not to mention the bad publicly they would and the Country would get. Not that would bother them. It’s a disgrace in this day of age that such a large City of culture lobbed in the middle of the wild Atlantic way hasn’t a motorhome parking Aire in place for visiting Motorhomers. I am sick of listening to that bulsh1t about campsites available, they are CLOSED because they are only interested in Caravans that don’t tour the Countryside during the winter. Another thing I would like to know is, are the owners of Motorhomes in Galway City paying those F*****s Road tax on their Motorhomes and accepting this kind of victimisation.
Anyone got an y foreign plates ? I will be in the Galway area with a bit of time to waste before the end of December.
I wonder what will happen regarding fines and parking tickets when sir Boris gets his way.will the yellow plates be regarded as foreign.
While arriving in the city i noticed completely empty Tesco etc car parks. It would possibly also be viable to find a quiet corner there late at night, and head to Cathedral car park early in AM. Still a lot of messing I agree
It’s not the sort of scenario any Motorhome owner/user wants to encounter..... until it’s resolved it’ll be getting a wide berth from us.
Sad that a vibrant city as Galway is turning its back on visitors.

We stopped in Galway Harbour 2 summers ago for a couple of nights and would have to say the Harbour Master couldn’t have been more accommodating and would have to say that Galway city just pulls the money out of your wallet because you just love the Craic.
It would be great if someone could turn this all around
I sent this to 25 contacts I have in Galway City Council, staff & councillors and copied to Galway Bay FM last night.
Galway City is not getting good press and comment on forums SEE HERE. Why does Galway not follow the example of other cities and provide for motorhome parking? SEE HERE how Cobh is rated 7.8 out of 10 by 50 reviewers in one of Europe's leading online guides.
It's an absolute disgrace that there will be no motorhome parking place for those who are touring in motorhomes and wish to attend a couple of days in the 2020 European Capital of Culture
And, got THIS airtime this morning pon Galway Bay FM, scroll to 1:05:45
The person writing the Facebook comments has been fortunate and hopefully they will remain so, though I doubt if they will come back to report if they get ticketed.
The post by sootyrex (#19) seems to me to be an honest and factual comment on the attitude of the authorities, and we know for a fact that the harbour is now prohibited.
The legislation quoted by (I think) Baguette, is a very oblique way of forbidding parking, it certainly does not give the impression of a welcoming local authority.
The persistent posts by a diverse cross section of posters who are not part of any inter forum squabble would seem to prove that on balance Galway, and I include Salthill in this definition do not wish to promote and develop or indeed simply tolerate parking within their jurisdiction.
The fact that the poster appears to have deliberately mis spelt the surname of the craic forum owner makes me suspicious of their post, and whilst they may not be lying, I suspect there is some exaggeration.
I have not been in Galway for perhaps 40 years and have sufficient faith in the posters on this forum and their experiences not to waste my time in visiting what is simply another town in Ireland.
All I can say is that I followed the recommended procedure the first and second time (bought and displayed 2 tickets as taking up 2 spaces). First time I got a 40 euro fine for overnight camping. I’m sorry now that I did not contest it, as the second time I was there, I walked around and checked every sign in Cathedral car park. Camper vans are not mentioned at all. Second time I stayed there from around 7:30 am on a Saturday morning and left I think around 4pm. I had 2 tickets and did not get fined, but I had not stayed overnight. It’s a pity as we love it there and did a fair bit of Xmas shopping. The local shops are really helpful, and I am now enjoying wine recommend by the ‘wine buff’ in his store Happy Christmas to all

That's what I replied, they must of been fortunate.
She did reply that they use it regular. We as a community can't keep singing from different hymn sheets, which seems to be the case on some things on Faecebook.
I am very satisfied that Galway CoCo are not welcoming to Motorhome owners, be they local or from further afield, that much is blatantly obvious.
You hit the nail on the head Ally
Until certain county councillors leave the council and galway bay fm change their attitude motor homes will never be welcome in galway

I agree about the councillors, they are too often influenced by vested interests as they look short-term to the next election.
However, in fairness, Galway Bay FM has given our side valuable air-time on a number of occasions and help in keeping the pot on the boil.
On our most recent segment on the station, Galway City Council was invited to discuss their rationale behind their stance of refusing to provide for overnight motorhome parking for tourists visiting their city.
I for one would be interested to hear why they feel it necessary to apply 'temporary dwelling' regulations to certain vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of passengers and not to others in the same EU category.
Keith Finnigan on galway bay fm is changing his thinking (as he once said why would you want to stay in a white tin box with all the fine hotels in galway)
Maybe if he was shown inside a van it may help the cause
